Setup and status guides
- Merchants: follow Connect PayPal in Affilyn for screenshots of the connection form, readiness badges, and partner availability.
- Partners: follow Connect and confirm PayPal for the pending-confirmation and preferred-destination examples.
- Payment status: compare the merchant's unclaimed payout example with the partner's PayPal history examples.
- Blocked setup or requests: use the payout recovery examples to distinguish merchant readiness, destination confirmation, and the minimum balance.
PayPal payout FAQs
1. Does Affilyn hold or supply PayPal payout funds?
No. Funds come from the merchant's connected PayPal Business account and are sent by PayPal to the partner's confirmed destination. Affilyn coordinates eligibility, authorization, status, records, and reconciliation without holding the money.
2. What does the merchant need before connecting PayPal?
The merchant needs a PayPal Business account, a REST application for the correct Sandbox or Live environment, Client ID and Client Secret, PayPal Payouts access, webhook-management permission, and sufficient funding for payouts and fees.
3. Does Affilyn use a shared platform PayPal account?
No. Each PayPal-enabled shop uses its own versioned, encrypted merchant credentials. Affilyn never funds a merchant payout from an Affilyn-owned or another merchant's PayPal account.
4. What do Connected, Payouts Ready, Webhook Operational, and Enabled for partners mean?
Connected means the merchant credential was authorized. Payouts Ready means required PayPal Payouts permission is available. Webhook Operational means Affilyn found or registered the merchant webhook and stored its Webhook ID. Enabled for partners means the merchant made PayPal selectable for this store. All four are required.
5. Where does the PayPal Webhook ID come from?
PayPal returns the Webhook ID when Affilyn finds or creates the merchant application's webhook. Affilyn stores it with the encrypted credential version; it is not the SendGrid Webhook ID and partners do not enter it.
6. Why does PayPal show Action required or Restricted?
The credential may be invalid, the environment may not match, Payouts or webhook-management permission may be missing, or PayPal may have restricted the merchant account. Resolve the PayPal requirement, then reconnect or refresh status.
7. Why does the merchant see PayPal Ready while the partner sees Unavailable?
The merchant must also enable PayPal in Methods available to partners, and both pages must use the same store and environment. The partner must then add and confirm a store-scoped PayPal destination.
8. How does a partner configure a PayPal destination?
The partner selects the store, saves the email belonging to their PayPal account, confirms ownership, opens Affilyn's confirmation email, and uses the one-time link within 24 hours. After confirmation, PayPal can be selected as Preferred.
9. Is saving a PayPal email the same as confirming it?
No. Saving creates a pending-confirmation destination. It cannot become the preferred automated destination until the partner completes the newest valid email confirmation link.
10. What if the PayPal confirmation link expired or was already used?
The partner should save the current PayPal destination again and use the newest email. Links expire after 24 hours, are one-time, and cannot be reused after the destination changes.
11. Does confirming the email guarantee PayPal will accept a payout?
No. Confirmation proves the destination was deliberately configured through the partner account. PayPal can still reject or leave a payout unclaimed because of recipient account, country, currency, compliance, or provider rules.
12. What does Preferred destination mean?
It is the confirmed provider Affilyn uses for future scheduled or merchant-initiated payouts for this store. Affilyn never silently switches between PayPal and Stripe when the preferred provider is unavailable.
13. Can a partner replace or disconnect PayPal during a payout?
No. Destination changes are blocked while commissions are reserved or a payout is approved, queued, processing, or otherwise active. Existing payouts retain an immutable masked destination snapshot.
14. Why is Request payout disabled?
Common causes are incomplete PayPal confirmation, merchant PayPal not operational/enabled, insufficient available balance, holding period, threshold, currency mismatch, requests disabled by policy, or another active request or payout.
15. What happens after a PayPal payout request is approved?
Approval creates a durable idempotent execution job using the selected merchant credential and partner destination snapshot. PayPal batch acceptance changes the payout to Processing; it becomes Paid only after authoritative provider confirmation.
16. How do Pay now and scheduled PayPal payouts work?
Pay now is confirmed by the merchant using the partner's preferred confirmed destination. Weekly runs occur Monday at 00:00 UTC and monthly runs on day one at 00:00 UTC. Both enforce holding period, currency, threshold, cap, provider readiness, destination readiness, and active-payout rules.
17. What does Unclaimed mean?
PayPal has not delivered/claimed the payout item for the recipient. The merchant should confirm the masked destination with the partner and may use Cancel unclaimed when appropriate. After PayPal verifies the return, Affilyn releases the commissions safely.
18. What should we do if a PayPal payout stays Processing?
Do not create another payout. Review the provider batch/item reference and operational alerts, then allow webhook processing and reconciliation to determine the authoritative outcome. Contact Affilyn support if it remains unresolved unusually long.
19. Can the same PayPal payout be submitted twice?
Affilyn reserves exact commission rows and uses stable idempotency references. Unknown outcomes remain reserved. Merchants and partners must never create a duplicate to work around an approved, processing, or unclaimed payout.
20. Is a manual PayPal send the same as automated PayPal Payouts?
No. A manual PayPal send happens outside Affilyn and must be recorded afterward with its external reference and evidence. Automated PayPal Payouts uses the connected merchant REST application, durable jobs, provider webhooks, and reconciliation.
21. Where can merchants and partners see completed PayPal payouts?
Merchants use Payouts and Payout History. Partners use Payout History for the selected store. Records show amount, status, timestamps, masked destination snapshot, and PayPal provider reference without exposing credentials.
Limitations
- This FAQ covers PayPal payouts only, not Stripe or generic off-platform manual payments.
- Internal endpoints, operational secrets, and full provider credentials are intentionally excluded.
